But I only ever found used issues later on, from film fairs and secondhand shops. I like how it's writing is more serious than Famous Monsters while still being full of photos. It was a great US magazine that certainly fit this category; did you ever find any there? CoF featured not only horror films, but a wide variety of films in general, including many European productions, as well as coverage of comics, fantasy literature, tv, and much more. I do a tribute page about CoF's original run of issues, Drawbridge Of The Castle (which is on Facebook)--Thanx, Jim.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-69129741914010860702010-11-03T04:17:35.704+00:002010-11-03T04:17:35.704+00:00Great post. What made it more difficult in the provinces was the the larger newsagents such as WH Smith didn't seem to stock either import comics or the UK horror mags. I think things did get a little easier at some point on the comics front and I was able to get a good run of titles like "Howard the Duck" and even complete runs of film 'adaptations' such as "Logan's Run" and "2001". But the only way to guarantee not missing issues of comics or magazines was to place an order at the local newagents who would then deliver them with the daily newspapers, and even a couple of years later I found it could sometimes still be tricky to get film monthlies such as "Films & Filming".Milesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-62667981406815451002010-10-28T19:56:57.594+01:002010-10-28T19:56:57.594+01:00Miles, that's good to hear. I was worried that this personal recollection was too random an account of my own bad luck, rather than a reflection of the experiences of other UK monster fans at that time.

Mike, I'll peruse Dez's site at length. It was very difficult to find every issue of "Jonah Hex" (having to scout around various small newsagents in Wolverhampton) while I'm not sure I'd even heard of FMoF. As a result we prized them much more than the books we casually order from amazon today. I remember getting my first stash of rare books as a Christmas present too, after reading about them and finding a source for them in HoH. Then I found a couple of shops in Birmingham that were essentially comic shops but also stocked some genre film material. "Photon" was immediately my favourite mag, my first also being issue 26 with the CURSE OF THE DEMON cover/article.Milesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-1937078116475614512010-10-27T19:42:51.455+01:002010-10-27T19:42:51.455+01:00Not only was it in newstands, I think it was in th...Not only was it in newstands, I think it was in the kids section!
