I can remember seeing Gregory's Girl as part of a double feature with Hawk the Slayer. My first adult film which my parents took me to see was The Outlaw Josey Whales which was a 'AA' when I was aged 10 along with my little brother and the film playing with it at the time was Trail by Combat Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14244973404343328664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-40324109144997793752014-11-06T23:52:24.674+00:002014-11-06T23:52:24.674+00:00Really enjoying the blog Mark!

As a 9 year old I remember thinking it was some sort of mistake but the cinema got complaints galore that day. I think somebody had recently got their P45 ;)Zetametallichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13749618765798112604noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-77201262568551298792014-10-21T13:01:58.539+01:002014-10-21T13:01:58.539+01:00Zeta, yeah the support films briefly dwindled to a...Zeta, yeah the support films briefly dwindled to a few pop videos, but I didn't enjoy that audiences just kept on talking! They still stop the film for intermissions and you get ice creams from the lady, there's an old fashioned ticket machine and of course it is a one screener. Back in the eighties they had the smoking and non smoking sides and they would show summer holiday films as a double feature- I remember Superman 1 and 2.

I remember the tale end of support films in the early eighties. Watching one about an otter before Herbie goes bananas on the now derelict Ritzy 1,2,3 (later 051 cinema). It was my first experience of a cinema and I remember queuing up the outside stairs in the rain only to enjoy the support film and hate the main feature! Duran Duran were also in a support film of sorts in the mid eighties that lasted about 10 minutes I think?

Zetametallichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13749618765798112604noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-72876475537206284112014-09-26T23:54:58.806+01:002014-09-26T23:54:58.806+01:00Yes, James, there were many re-releases in cinemas...Yes, James, there were many re-releases in cinemas in the 70s. If they were popular, like Bond films, they would still pull in more money than a television sale. Also, they often needed older films to make up double-bills.
This all meant we got to see many films in the cinema that we'd otherwise have missed.Mark Hodgsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08744056312268440003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-76139795862124135072014-09-26T22:00:21.425+01:002014-09-26T22:00:21.425+01:00Thank you for reminding me of my 70s movie going. ...Thank you for reminding me of my 70s movie going. My father took me to the cinema at an early age and from then on it was a regular occurence, going to the ABC or the Odeon in Northampton.

I believe I watched many of Sean Connery's Bond movies in the cinema during the 70s rather than on television. I think I saw a lot of re-released 60s movies. Was that common in the 70s?

I saw Live and Let Die as a seven year old. It was a big deal as it was a new Bond. Therefore I am pretty sure that I must have seen Diamonds Are Forever too in the cinema.

Movies I remember are Herbie Rides Again, Ring of Bright Water, all Roger Moore Bond movies, Airport 75, Earthquake, Towering Inferno, Guns of Navarone, all the Clueso movies and accidentally watching a short on topless bathing in St. Tropez and wondering what to say to my father. I think I tactfully said that it was rubbish.Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05075123015442859635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-67654125781479486752014-08-02T22:09:03.646+01:002014-08-02T22:09:03.646+01:00FAN-tastic article!!

Going to "the flicks" was special back then. In the early 1980s I saw films like First Blood. You didn't mention the women at the front of the screen who would sell choc ices and sweets. You just had to stick your hand up and they'd come over, or you could go down to them.Movie Manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05354687717871885741noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-3298505452621925952013-04-16T02:55:42.898+01:002013-04-16T02:55:42.898+01:00Oh yeah, 35mm is by far my preferred format, and I...Oh yeah, 35mm is by far my preferred format, and I'm sad that it now seems to be giving way to digital.
