This is one of my favorite films of all time -- and not just favorite genre films!

It's such a beautifully written and very well acted piece of savage cinema.

It is extremely well made, well photographed, and quite plausible.

It's a crime that this isn't on DVD anywhere in the world.

I heard once that MGM now owns the rights. Originally released via AIP.

I originally saw it as THE HOUSE BY THE LIKE, a subtle title I favor.Phantom of Pulphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03684169251989469824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-59974815510465688632009-10-06T08:36:58.483+01:002009-10-06T08:36:58.483+01:00I wasn't old enough to see the film either - i...I wasn't old enough to see the film either - it was one of the first films I snuck into underage!

WEDDING IN WHITE sounds interesting...Mark Hodgsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08744056312268440003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16605980.post-55700052954871996712009-10-06T08:22:17.205+01:002009-10-06T08:22:17.205+01:00That DEATH WEEKEND quad poster is a classic. I rem...That DEATH WEEKEND quad poster is a classic. I remember it from ads in the local newspaper and "in the flesh" around town and outside the cinema. (BTW I think I may still have that quad!) But I was still at school at the time, and it wasn't until I left school that (at 16) I started seeing "X" films; I first saw DW on a double-bill (possibly with STRAW DOGS?), and then again later as a VHS rental.

DW seems like a "typical rape/revenge movie" firmly entrenched in the exploitation genre. Yet...

Prior to this director William Fruet had made WEDDING IN WHITE, a very serious and depressing film, indeed it's so serious and depressing that even though it's rather good and stars Donald Pleasence and Carol Kane I can't really recommend it as entertainment. I guess we should ignore his subsequent work!

Secondly, Brenda Vaccaro isn't an obvious choice as victim-heroine in an exploitation flick; she was in her mid-30's for one thing. Of course, Don Stroud had long before proved himself to be one of the great screen bad guys in COOGAN'S BLUFF, and despite outshining Robert De Niro in BLOODY MAMA basically became a regular fixture in TV cop shows in the 70's and 80's...but he's great in virtually everything he appears in.

So...I'm just not sure about DEATH WEEKEND. Ostensibly a cynical commercial venture, but was/is there more to it than that? It's a shame that there isn't an uncut DVD to let us decide for ourselves once and for all.Milesnoreply@blogger.com
